Skate park Meeting
Wednesday, November 14, 6 pm -7:15 pm Russell Avenue Community
Centre
*Locations
Three locations were discussed for the park.
Each site has advantages and disadvantages.
I. Lower level parking lot- near downtown, easy
for people to get to, City owned land, noise would not be an issue, safe
2. 69 Catherine St.-
near downtown, easy for people to get to, noise could be an issue due to nearby
homes, beside RACC therefore access to bathrooms, phones, etc. City owned land,
park under development, safe
3. Under Garden City Skyway bridge, QEW, bunting
road- north end but is on a bus route, noise would not be an issue, MTO owned
land, somewhat protected from the elements, safety? Parents may not feel safe
sending their children to the park
The committee and staff must pick a site within
the next couple of months to advance planning.
*Fund Raising
Ideas
-reviewed the fund raising ideas from the July
meeting
-agreed the committee needs to plan a kick off
event in February or March
-ideas discussed for a kick off event were a
silent auction event geared towards adults at the Merchant Ale House, downtown.
Prior to the event a demonstration event could be held late afternoon for the
youth and adults, charge a small fee
-new ideas for fund raising included designing a
calendar with pictures of local skateboarders. The calendar could be sold in
schools, downtown stores, etc. Other ideas included getting a skateboard
donated and selling raffle tickets in the schools.
* Design
Recommendations
-include a graffiti wall to try to keep graffiti
off of the area, concern of the Downtown Association -within the design have an
easier section for beginners and a challenging area for intermediate to
advanced level of skater/biker
