St. Catharines Skatepark Meeting Wednesday, May 29, 2002, 7:30 pm R.A.C.C.

1. Temporary park design

Nan presented a drawing for the design of the temporary skatepark. The design of the park tried to keep in mind the needs of skateboarders and bikers. People liked the design and the building of the park will begin when the materials have been brought over from West49’s park. Home Depo and a Roofing Company will be approached for donations of plywood for graffiti boards, deck screws and other needed materials. Parks will be approached about the donation of one bench for the park.

2. West 49 Park

Volunteers are needed June 1 and 2 between 9 am to 4:30 pm to help take down the park. People are asked to bring drills, hammers and crow bars. Any help is needed. More materials will be taken out over the weekend by City staff. Jon will see if the Standard can put an article in Friday's paper about needing volunteers to help out with the park.

3. Graffiti

Discussion took place about graffiti. The Niagara Region Police Department are taking steps to reduce graffiti in St. Catharines. Committee recommended graffiti boards be placed at the temporary and permanent park for graffiti. Graffiti put on the building will be removed as quickly as possible.

4. Opening Day, June 22, Skate Jam

A Skate jam will take place Saturday, June 22 10am to 2 pm at the temporary park. The event wll be advertised by word of mouth, newsletter, fliers and cogeco. Duffs has been contacted about providing pizza at a reduced rate for the day. Pop and chips will also be available during the day. Hopefully the t-shirts will be ready for people to buy on the day of the event.

5. Grape and Wine

St. Catharines Skatepark Committee would like to put a float in the parade. Members discussed a banner and having a truck with people skateboarding around the fliers. Fabricland will be approached about donating material for a banner. To relate to the theme of heroes, skateboard heroes could be profiled. People would like to put a mini-ramp, quarter pipe at Montebello Park for demos and use of people before and following the parade. Perhaps sell buttons. t-shirts. Etc.

6. Other fund raisers

Car washes, skate video showings and perhaps a band are ideas. Kathy has been requested to make a presentation at a Lions Club for possible donations towards the permanent park.
